Fans of Summit Brewing‘s Unchained Series are in for more treats than tricks this October. On October 28 at The Nook they will release the newest beer in their Unchained Series, a traditional Bière de Garde from brewer Jeff Williamson. Bière de Garde is one of the major French contributions to specialty beer styles originating in the du Nord and Pas-de-Calais regions of northern France. The name roughly translates to “beer for keeping,” which references the traditional practice of brewing and storing a more alcoholic beer for the warmer months when brewing was difficult prior to modern refrigeration—a practice also leading to the creation of Belgian Saisons.
Unlike it’s Saison cousin and its light color, effervescent body, and citrusy, peppery taste, Bière de Garde is generally a hearty malt-forward beer. Williamson’s brew pours dark mahogany and has a medium-body full of toffee, cherry, and biscuit flavors with a slight astringency from the roasted malt, and spicy hop aromas. The finish is semi-dry with a pleasant hotness from the alcohol that will keep you warm in the cold winter months.
Unchained Series #14 Bière de Garde will be available on draught and in bottle on October 28. The release party will be held at The Nook in St. Paul from 4pm-6pm and will include a meet-and-greet with Jeff Williamson, food pairings, and $2.50 pints of all Summit beer (from 3pm-6pm).
