It’s official—the United States has over 5,000 breweries in operation. The record-setting number comes from the Brewers Association’s Year in Review released its year in review on December 5.
In December 2015, the country’s brewery count hit a historic high of 4,144 breweries, surpassing the previous mark of 4,131 set in 1873. Since last year, over 800 new craft breweries have added to that tally.
As of November 30, 2016, the U.S. boasted 5,005 breweries in operation, with many more breweries in planning. Ninety-nine percent of breweries currently in operation are small, independent craft breweries under the Brewers Association’s definition. In comparison, the U.S. currently has 10,000 wineries.
“In the face of numerous opportunities and challenges in 2016, small and independent craft brewers continue to thrive,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “This community should be very proud of what it has accomplished and how far it has come.”
