Former NHL goaltender Ed Belfour raised nearly $179,000 to join his son in the distillery business.
The auction included 66 items of memorabilia, including his gold medal from the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Belfour was the third-string goalie on Canada’s team in Salt Lake, not seeing any playing time behind Martin Brodeur and Curtis Joseph.
Belfour is joining his son, Dayn, in a Texas-based venture, Belfour Distilleries, that will focus on producing bourbon and other whiskeys.
He played in the NHL from 1989 to 2004, winning the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999. He has the third most wins for a goalie in NHL history, and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
