If you’ve been paying attention to any beer-related Twitter feeds the past 24 hours, you’ve probably seen chef David Chang’s controversial GQ opinion piece berating “beer snobs” and the craft beer they hold so dear. Garret Oliver, Brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewery and author of The Oxford Companion to Beer, certainly took note.
For those of you that missed it, David Chang–widely recognized as one of the world’s most talented chefs–took to GQ.com yesterday to publish an abrasive critique of what amounted to any beer that is not Bud Light.
David Chang in GQ:
Mr. Chang added fuel to the fire, Tweeting the following:
While I love all beers this is the unicorn microbrew I want to drink pic.twitter.com/535lv26kIh

The beer defenders of the internet were quick to hit back at Chang’s perspective:

Today, in a response published on GQ, Garret Oliver fired back at the esteemed chef. Using an impressively prudent analogy, Oliver says he could “still murder a bag of White Castle cheeseburgers at midnight,” but that doesn’t mean he goes around “telling Danny Meyer about it every time I see him.” Clarifying that there is a time and place for everything, Oliver goes on to say, “White Castle is nostalgic, but Shake Shack burgers make me stupid with happiness.”
Garret Oliver’s response on GQ.com:
So, what do you think, Growler Nation? Is David Chang just just stirring up shit for the sake of stirring up shit? Or does he have a point? And was Garret Oliver about right in his perception of Chang’s ignorance?
